This self-initiated data visualisation zine was created during my Masters program at RMIT University, with my own family as the subject. Over six months, from February to July 2018, I tracked every interaction I had with each family member across WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, phone calls and emails. I collected and sorted all of this raw data in Excel, then transformed it into a series of hand-crafted visual datasets, turning numbers into something warm, intimate and human.
The result is a zine that doubles as a kind of portrait of family connection – who I reached out to the most, which platforms I used, and how the rhythm of communication shifted across the months. What began as a design exercise quickly became something more reflective, a record of relationships, distance and the quiet effort we make to stay close to the people we love.
This project sits at the intersection of data literacy, information design and personal storytelling, and reflects my belief that the most compelling visualisations are the ones that make you feel something.
